An original comedy about the most famous bad decision in history plays three nights only at The Junction, from October 30 to November 1.
It was supposed to take three days. It has taken ten years. Outside the walls of Troy, the greatest army ever assembled has run out of ideas, patience and clean laundry. Inside the Greek camp, the men in charge are holding another meeting.
The Big Wooden Whoopsie is the Trojan War told as a workplace comedy, “Monty Python meets Succession.” Agamemnon, King of Kings, is a CEO obsessed with legacy branding. Odysseus is the neurotic manager who believes he is the only competent man in the Mediterranean. Achilles, the greatest warrior in history, has quietly quit and now mostly promotes his sponsors. Across the wall in Troy, King Priam, eighty-three, is working on his crossword, and Helen, the woman the whole war is supposedly about, is watching very carefully to see how her choice plays out.
Then someone suggests a horse.
Far below the kings and heroes, two ordinary men do the actual work. Bob is a Trojan gate guard, strictly nine to five, who took the job for the pension plan. Thersites is a Greek carpenter who was told this would all be over in three days. They stand on opposite sides of the wall, and over ten years they have become the closest thing either army has to a friendship.
Add a prophet who is always right and never believed, a soldier who takes his undercover role far too seriously, and you have a fast, silly, very physical comedy with a surprising amount to say about pride, power and who pays for the decisions made at the top.
The Big Wooden Whoopsie is performed in English by a multinational cast of Dubai residents. It is the first play written by a Romanian to be staged in the UAE, and is co-directed by Aarti Aney and Ovidiu Dugulan.
There are three performances only. Friday October 30 is opening night. Saturday October 31 is Halloween, a fitting date for the story of history’s most famous disguise. Sunday November 1 is closing night.
